Communicating with Students

Updated on

Canvas provides many ways for you to communicate with your students.  The two simplest ways to communicate with your students is the Announcements tool and the Inbox/Conversations tool.

Announcements

Announcements allow you to send messages to students in your course. You can specify the announcements by section, or send them to your entire class.  Typically Announcements are used as a one-way communication method for instructors/TAs to send out mass communications.

We recommend that you remind your students to check their notification settings and ensure the settings are set to receive your announcements.

Inbox/Conversations

For instructors who prefer back-and-forth messages within Canvas, the Inbox or Conversations tool serves as an internal form of email communication. Although each faculty member has one inbox, the tools allow you to filter by course and by section.

The Inbox/Conversations tool can be used to message one or more individual users, Canvas group members, Canvas course sections, or enrolled users by role (e.g. All Students or All TAs in a course).
